Do we really know what we are giving our children when we had them a vitamin? First, I'd say we were definitely giving them a preference for artificial flavoring. Next, we are instilling the concept that pills are good for your health! Third we teaching them prepackaged products contain goodness. I still remember my daughter's early "addiction" to children's vitamins. Oh, she would cry for more than one. She was little, it wasn't like she was 12 or anything, but she let her wishes be made known, loud and clear.
She was a climber. She still proclaims that heights do not bother her. Her love for her children's vitamins prompted me to keep them on top of the refrigerator. The way my kitchen was arranged, the refrigerator was more or less free standing away from counters, etc. My washer and dryer were down the hall near the main bath. Much to my surprise, when I came back to the kitchen from having put in a load of laundry, my little vitamin addict was sitting on top of the refrigerator trying to get the bottle opened.
That was about 35 years ago, before the real hazardous addictive things were even thought of. I've contemplated that scene now, all these years later and I still have no idea how she scaled that refrigerator to get to the top. But her goal was clear. In retrospect, I realize I taught her some very bad health practices in an effort to make her healthy. I was already fighting traditional medicine and feeding her organic fruits and vegetables. I have no idea what made me think she needed artificial supplements.
I can't even imagine all that has been added to children's vitamins, lo these many years later.
